Back in September of 1978 I entered college in the province of Quebec. It was a heady experience after I got over the culture shock of speaking only English to mostly speaking French. The radio was always on and during the day it was a French Top40 station which played Top40 English hits with French hits and they did a pretty good job of programming.

I fell in love with so many artists like Beau Dommage, Fiori Seguin, Harmonium and specifically Toulouse, Boule Noire and Nanette Workman. Toulouse was a trio of bilingual french vocalists of Heather Gauthier, Laurie Niedzielski Zimmerman and Judi Richards. They are represented here with Funkysation, a funky stomper sung with such conviction in french that it barely needs translating. It has that "voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir" vibe.

These three women were based in Montréal and sang backgrounds on many releases coming out of that city, most notably Gino Soccio's "Dancer" where Heather and Laurie wailed away and pushed it to #1 disco for six weeks! They had an American hit with "APB" but more success in their home province.

Toulouse had many hits, but their most successful LP is "Taxi Pour Une Nuit Blanche" or "The Taxi For Your All Night Party" with five hits including "Funkysation". I dedicate it to my roommate Suzanne P. a rocker who walked in my house just as I put this on the stereo and she dropped her stuff at the door and got to gettin' down.
