"The word Funky was originally applied, in the 1950s, to a certain type of jazz (Funky jazz). By extension, it applies to all music that contains certain characteristics that are related to qualities considered "black". Strongly accentuated rhythm, especially the bass lines, use of very syncopated riffs, etc."
