Funky and Cheeky; Wild and Free; Schmaltzy and Free (2020) was composed for Jasdeep Singh Degun. Working with Jasdeep presented an opportunity to write in a way I wouldn’t normally write. As such, Funky and Cheeky; Wild and Free; Schmaltzy and Free is slightly unique compared to my usual output, whereby the performer is granted opportunities to improvise via textual prompts accompanying the minimal musical notation in the score, hence the title of the piece.

I am interested in kitsch/camp aesthetics in the context of contemporary classical music, which has evolved into exploring the relationships between comedy/slapstick and music. With the improvisational nature of this piece, my approach to weaving these ideas of humour into this piece was through the choice of adjectives for the title and the textual prompts in the score. My previous work exploring ideas of comedy have been very inward-looking, but incorporating an improvisational aspect to a piece allows the performer to project their own subtext and context to these adjectives, ultimately informing their musical/artistic decisions.
